Studies on Water Pollution Kwangju Area

Abstract
In view of the ever increasing water pollution problems of rivers in the vicinity of large urban communities, the author has investigated and researched polluted waters sampled from the Gwangju River in the Gwangju area, from Januarly to December of 1974.
The water samples were taken 12 times during the period of study each from one of the 6 sampling points used in the two areas.
The results are as follours:
1) Generally polluted water flows into the Kwangju Bay area without treatment. The pollution tendency was relatively higher in the downstream flow than in the upstream flow in Kwangju River. The highest valve was measured below the Kwangju Bridge.
2) The Kwangju River, which pass through Kwangju City, showed the highest pollution valve in the urban city area although it graduablly decreased further down-stream where it runs into the kwangju River. Because the Gwangju River, receives the water of the Kwangju River, it has the possibility of being rapidly polluted not only from the city but also from the effluents released from the nightsoil tank constructed along downstream of the Sangmu-dong area of the city.
3) In order to prevent further pollution of the Kwangju River and to allow this water to be used as a source of drinking water in the Kwangju area protective action must be taken.
